Tenth grade students from Leadership Prep School (LPS) received an unexpected lesson in servant leadership while preparing for their retreat at Camp Buckner in Burnet, Texas.
After learning that nearly 40 foster children from Beaumont were moved to Camp Buckner as a result of Hurricane Harvey, students from LPS began gathering supplies to take with them.
“Our National Junior Honor Society students and Student Lighthouse teams used over $800 that they raised from concession sales to purchase toys, clothing, and personal care items for some of our state’s most vulnerable residents,” said Dr. Katie Chretien, Humanities teacher and National Junior Honor Society Faculty Sponsor at LPS. “The students have been very excited about delivering these items to provide hope to the children housed at Camp Buckner.”
Tenth-grade student Skylar J. Christian added, “I’m super excited to help the families affected by Hurricane Harvey. From hoodies to toy dolls, we are trying to give these kids what has been taken away. Everyone at LPS is honored to be given this opportunity.”
Laura May, Executive Director over Buckner Children and Family Services for Southeast Texas said, “I can’t say enough about how grateful we are to Leadership Prep School for their donations. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts. So many of our staff, family, and friends have lost everything in this flood, and we know all that you have done will help. God bless your students and your families for reaching out. It shows that our youth and their future leadership are about healing and coming together – something we need now more than ever in our country.”
